How I Used Scripture, Prayer, Therapy, and Medication to Manage My Bipolar Depression

Although I started exhibiting signs of Bipolar 1 Disorder in my late teens, I wasn't officially diagnosed until I was in my early twenties. I wasn't even sure what to name the emotional turmoil I was going through at the time. I had a gut feeling that something was amiss. I experienced both crushing lows that left me feeling lost and undeserving and soaring highs that gave me the impression that I was unbeatable. I struggled for years and I was embarrassed to discuss it, especially as a believer. It was confusing.

I'm 37 years old now, and I want to spread the simple truth that hope is always possible even though healing is not a straight line.

It hasn't been easy to manage bipolar depression, but by God's grace, I've discovered a daily healing rhythm that keeps me going even when things seem difficult. This rhythm consists of prayer, therapy, Scripture, and medication compliance.

1. Prayer: Where I Find Honesty

Sometimes I just cry and groan instead of using fancy words. However, Romans 8:26 serves as a reminder:

“The Spirit helps us in our weakness… the Spirit himself intercedes for us with groanings too deep for words.”

My lifeline, a place where I don't have to pretend, is prayer. I bring my emotional tiredness, racing thoughts, and anxiety to the One who already knows. I've found clarity and solace in God's presence.

2. Therapy: A Present, Not a Betrayal of Faith

I believed for a long time that I didn't trust God enough if I needed therapy. However, I've discovered that healing and wisdom can coexist. I now have a vocabulary for my feelings, techniques to control my moods, and peace-keeping techniques due to therapy. Therapy helps me manage my thoughts; it doesn't take the place of God.

3. Medications:  An Act of Stewardship

It was difficult for me to accept that taking medicine would be a part of my journey. However, I've realized that taking medicine as directed by a doctor does not imply a lack of faith; rather, it is a way to work with healing. My life has become more stable as a result of my medication compliance, which has improved my ability to function, develop, and flourish.

4. Scripture: My Soul's Anchor

When my emotions try to deceive me, I turn to God's Word. I am reminded of the stability I long for by verses such as Isaiah 26:3:

“You will keep in perfect peace all who trust in You, all whose thoughts are fixed on You.”

I use sticky notes to write scriptures. When I am feeling numb, I read aloud from the Psalms. Even David, a man after God’s own heart , went through periods of extreme depression, but God never turned him away, I remind myself.

I still have bad days. There are mornings that are heavier than others. However, I've discovered that healing is about progress rather than perfection. It's about living your life, relying on Jesus, and understanding that you are incredibly loved even when you don't feel well.

You are not alone if you are a woman or young person reading this. God is aware of your difficulties. He doesn't feel embarrassed by your illness. Even in the valley, he walks beside you. And time and again, He has provided you with the means to get back up—prayer, counseling, medicine, Scripture, and community.

Don't give up, then. Continue. You're healing, not just getting by.
