A bricklayer is patient. He takes his time to ensure that the structure he is constructing is sturdy and stable, he carefully places each brick, one at a time. Why? Because he's building a house, not just laying bricks. Something durable. Something that will not fall apart during a storm.

This is a lovely illustration of how to improve and develop our emotional and mental well-being, particularly when we are dealing with bipolar disorder, depression, anxiety, or any other mental illness. Peace and healing take time. It takes a while. But with God's assistance, we can erect a sturdy structure, brick by brick.

You Are Not Too Broken to Be Whole

Let's begin here: God doesn't find your life too chaotic. You can heal regardless of your diagnosis, your pain, or your thoughts. God is a constructor. He restores things. He helps you rebuild by identifying the damaged areas.

Jeremiah 30:17 (NLT) says:
“I will give you back your health and heal your wounds,” says the Lord. “For you are called an outcast—‘Jerusalem for whom no one cares.’”

God works in our hearts and minds in this way. He assists us in restoring what life, trauma, or mental illness attempted to destroy.

Brick One: Be Truthful

A strong foundation is the first step in any good structure. For us, being honest about our struggles is the first step in that process. We don't have to act as though everything is fine when it's not. Our truth can be handled by God.

Psalm 34:18 (NLT) says:

“The Lord is close to the brokenhearted; he rescues those whose spirits are crushed.”

God is near when we are sincere. That's where healing begins.

Brick Two: Surrender the Weight

Mental health issues can be burdensome. However, you don't have to bear the burden by yourself. Surrendering to God means allowing Him to assist you, not giving up.

1 Peter 5:7 (NLT) says:

“Give all your worries and cares to God, for he cares about you.”

"God, I can't do this on my own," surrender says. Please assist. And he does.

Brick Three: Look After Yourself

It takes discipline and work to heal. Every little step counts, whether it's attending therapy, taking your medicine, getting enough sleep, or spending time with God. Although mental health takes time to develop, you will see results if you are consistent.

Romans 12:2 (NLT) says:

“...Let God transform you into a new person by changing the way you think...”

God is gradually assisting you in changing. Keep going.

Brick Four: Never Build by Yourself

By itself, no brick is sturdy. The bricks surrounding any wall strengthen it, and the same is true for us. You require assistance. Don't isolate yourself from a support group, a therapist, a pastor, or a trusted friend.

Ecclesiastes 4:9-10 (NLT) says:

“Two people are better off than one… If one person falls, the other can reach out and help...”

You're not a burden. You are not alone, and you are loved.

Brick Five: Continue to Have Hope

Lastly, never give up hope. Even if it seems slow. Even if you don't get results right away. In actuality, God is still building.

Philippians 1:6 (NLT) says:

“And I am certain that God, who began the good work within you, will continue his work until it is finally finished…”

There is still more to your story. God is still at work in you, through you, and all around you.

Final Remarks

To the woman who feels tired.
To the teen who feels lost.
To the one battling anxiety, depression, or any other mental struggle—
You are building something strong.

One brick at a time. One step at a time. You're building a peaceful mental home with God's assistance.

Take your time. Avoid comparing your road to that of others. Simply keep moving forward. Give your hands to God. He's not done with you yet.

You're not damaged. You're developing. And you will be strong in the arms of God.
